2018 Southwest
DeFeo and Zulpo set out in October 2018 driving DeFeo’s rickety box truck, outfitted with a loft for sleeping and plenty of art storage, the two painters traveled through the Southwest from Denver, through New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah and back to Colorado. The trip took them through majestic sites such as White Sands, Joshua Tree National Park, and Zion National Park. On the journey they made studio visits to artists from Roswell to LA, as well as stopped to meander the West’s finest museums and galleries, RV parks, gas stations, and saloons. Guest Artist, Sophia Heymans, joined them from New York and spent time painting with the residents at the Grand Canyon. The residents produced over 50 paintings and made many new relationships during the 20 day trip.
